Director of Teaching and Learning

The Director of Teaching and Learning (DoTL) is responsible for teacher professional development, support, and growth. Through their work with teachers, the DoTL enhances the quality and impact of teaching and learning for every faculty member and student. Reporting to the Assistant Head of School for Academics, the DoTL will have an opportunity to contribute to an upbeat, growth-oriented professional learning community that appreciates collaboration, creativity, and an innovative approach to all aspects of school life. Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate is a leader in elementary school pedagogy and adult learning. They provide guidance, motivation, and professional support in facilitating teachers’ growth. The Director of Teaching and Learning will develop, implement, review, and oversee the school’s programs related to faculty development including: teacher mentorship, associate/co-teacher training, and faculty goal setting and growth. This position will serve on the Academic Leadership team and collaborate with the team on overseeing curriculum review and instructional practices .

 

Program Development

  • Further develop and improve the teacher mentorship program by building upon the existing frameworks to establish clear goals, systems for implementation, and a scope and sequence for adult learning
  • Lead monthly meetings for teachers in the mentorship program
  • Train experienced teachers in effective mentorship techniques
  • With the Assistant Head of School for Academics, coordinate and lead the onboarding process and orientation of newly hired teachers
  • Develop, lead, and oversee the Associate/Co-Teacher Program based on field scans, best practices, and a goal to build an effective teacher pipeline
  • Develop external partnerships with universities and credentialing organizations to strengthen the PBS teacher pipeline and internal professional development mechanisms for new teachers
  • Work with teachers to facilitate various program initiatives including, but not limited to: differentiation, social justice standards, Responsive Classroom practices, integrated projects, and field trips
  • Represents the school’s program to families with confidence, professionalism, and expertise

Engagement in Continuous Learning

  • Stay up to date on current trends, research, and innovations in education
  • Facilitate professional learning communities and in house professional development to share expertise and best practices
  • Model productive risk taking to explore innovative teaching approaches
  • Develop systems for promoting, measuring, and establishing goals for faculty engagement in professional development

Daily Tasks

  • Build positive and trusting relationships with teachers and families based on mutual respect and open communication
  • Provide individualized guidance and support to faculty members through classroom observation and reflection
  • Regularly and actively observe classroom instruction, with follow-up by providing constructive and candid feedback aligned with established frameworks and rubrics so that teachers will improve in their craft
  • Offer resources and tools to support teachers in implementing effective teaching practices
  • Model exemplary teaching practices by co-teaching or demonstration lessons
  • Act as a collaborative, engaged community member through daily duties, such as recess, lunch supervision, and/or arrival and dismissal
  • Serve as the administrator in charge of faculty and student concerns in the event of the Assistant Head of School for Academics’s absence

Key Qualifications and Background

  • Expert knowledge of elementary school best practices and a growth mindset
  • Strong understanding of a child's cognitive, social, and emotional development
  • Experience developing systems and leading organizational change in a school
  • Deep understanding of adult learning theory and/or teacher coaching
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for sharing their expertise
  • Strong interpersonal skills such as empathy, respect, patience, and flexibility
  • Espouse the PBS core values of kindness, community, courage, and love of learning
  • The ability to give honest, candid, and constructive feedback
  • Effective and reflective listening skills and an eagerness to invest in and celebrate others
 

Other Position Information

Full-time, 12-month position ranges from $125,000 to $160,000 depending on background and experience. PBS has an excellent benefits program in addition to salary.
